Elongated tortoise is the only tortoise species found in Nepal. It is critically endangered and on the verge of extinction due to bushmeat, illegal pet trade and habitat loss. It is protected by national legislation in many countries throughout its range but yet not listed under the protected species of Nepal. There is limited research and on-ground conservation activities and a lack of awareness on this topic.

This project aims to help conserve the Elongated tortoises in Eastern Nepal by documenting their distribution and threats, and raising public awareness. Also, it will develop site-specific tortoise conservation awareness tools, sensitize enforcement authorities, and secure the local community’s buy-in.
