“Poaching cases does not get detected and reported in many cases when it involves other than flagship species and if it’s outside the protected area. The current situation is serious since there are already many reports of poaching including elephant, deer, wild boar, and crocodile killings,” says Kumar Paudel, co-founder at Greenhood Nepal.

“There are less than 500 mature T. mairei trees (more than 30 cm diameter at breast height (dbh). If we include saplings (less than 10 cm dbh) and poles (10-30 cm dbh) then the total number is around 2000 in Nepal”, says Kumar Paudel co-founder at Greenhood Nepal.

“I always thought that people were probably not aware that harvesting parts was illegal. But most were aware.” says Kumar Paudel, co-founder of Greenhood Nepal.

According to Kumar Paudel, a researcher on pangolins and co-founder at Greenhood Nepal, “In 2013, there were 325 kg of pangolin scale seizures on the Araniko highway, he assumes about 1,300 pangolins must have been killed for that”.

“Our constitution has ensured equality to all citizens irrespective of their public position and influence. While some individuals found possessing such wildlife parts are arrested and sentenced to jail for several years, many in power are publicly displaying such parts at their homes and offices as objects of decoration without any legal repercussions,” says Kumar Paudel, Co-founder at Greenhood Nepal.
