On 27 July 2025, Greenhood Nepal organised a workshop to share preliminary results of research on Countering Illicit Exotic Pet Trade in Nepal, at Everest Hotel (Kathmandu). The workshop brought together 25 participants, including enforcement officials, journalists, legal professionals, and wildlife experts in Nepal. The result presentation covered key aspects such as species involved in trade, emerging trends, underlying drivers and governance gaps. A case study highlighting faith-based pet keeping practices in Kathmandu was also discussed in the event, which was followed by group work. Insights and feedback gathered from the workshop will help in developing actionable recommendations to curb the illegal exotic pet trade in Nepal.
This is part of the ongoing regional initiative ‘Countering illicit exotic pet trade in South Asia and Central Asia’, supported by the Bureau of International Narcotics and Enforcement Affairs (INL), US.
